'89 240 A/C condenser replace/convert? 200 1989

Hi all,
I've got an '89 240 wagon and it appears that the a/c comporessor has gone south. I'd rate myself a "medium-level" backyard mech, having done a few replacements using the Bentley book. But as the book doesn't give any details on (i.e., doesn't recommend) the owner trying to work on the a/c system, I', just wondering:
1. have any of your had experience replacing a compressor and would you recommend me giviing it a try and,
2. if I go ahead and do it, how difficult is doing the conversion to R134 and is it worthwhile?
thanks in advance for your always sound advice,
bill
