Where are my rear shocks? 700 1990

I know this is going to seem like a REALLY stupid post, but I can't seem to locate my shocks. I have a solid axle on my 1990 740 Sedan. I can see the coil springs but I don't see shocks anywhere. Aren't they supposed to be in the middle of the coil spring? I looked at PICs in the FAQ although it was a nivomat I think, but it showed shock in center.
