Rube Goldberg would describe the steering mechanism on my Dad's old 196?-ish LHD Land Rover. Those Brits didn't want to re-engineer the whole system just to suit some forein markets so they just added on. The steering box mounted to the firewall, and had an arm hooked to a linkage going forward to a pivot on the left side of the frame. From there a linkage went over to the right side to another pivot in the frame (the original pivot on a RHD car). This pivot then went to the left side wheel, with a drag link going back to the right. (As best I recall). I can't even recall the number of tie-rod joints in that system, something like 10 or more, I think. Seemed rather improbable, but worked pretty well.
