Check Engine Light on. Now wont turn over. 700 1989

Yesterday I went for a short drive to the store and noticed that the check engine light stayed on. I drove for about 4 miles and came back home. The car sat for about 3 hours. I went to go for another run to the store but the car would not turn over. I tryed a few times more but still would not start. I decided not to drain the battery so I gave it a rest for 2 more hours. Went to try again and BAM the car started up just like nothing was wrong! The check engine light is still on. I dont think I want to take the car out and get stuck so here I am looking for wisdom from THE BEST VOLVO BOARD IN THE WORLD!!

I live in San Diego and the weather is not hot so I dont think heat was an issue. And the temp gauge didnt look overheated.

Thanks, hope you folks can help.
