The 940 Problem?!? I have heard that Volvo eliminated this problem with bigger Girling front brake calipers on the 900 series cars. I have the EXACT same problem with my 1988 760 Turbo w/ Bendix front brakes...As you said, there is a tremendous shudder at highway speeds when the brakes are applied. However, my rotors are at minimum specification and are warped. That is only a small part of the problem, I believe. As you said, the shifter and the steering wheel shudder back-and-forth in my car. This happens even at low speeds in my case. All of the suspension bushings in the front of my car are less than a year old (I replaced them last summer in an attempt to correct this problem). These bushings did definitely ease the problem, as before there was a hard knocking noise associated with the shudder (almost as if someone was hitting the floorpan with a sledge hammer). I don't think that this problem is restricted to the 900 series cars. I do, however, wish to find a fix. I have replaced nearly every component of my front suspension system, including ball joints, all bushings, struts, strut bearing plates, etc. The only thing that I haven't replaced is the steering rack. That is probably my next endeavor. Everyone I talk to insists that it is warped rotors (as they are, but that is a totally different problem). If the rotors were truly the problem, the shudder would be more in the pedal and not in the body of the car. Anyway, if you find a fix, please let me know. Good Luck!
