Check engine light question 700 1989

if you have an OBD (I think you might be unfortunate and not have it since it is 1989. hard to say.) then you can try pulling the codes.

on the driver's side under the hood near the strut tower, look for a little box about 2 inches long and 1 inch wide with a little cover on it. it should have 1 button and 1 red LED and a little wire (test probe) attached to it. if you have that, you have OBD (onboard diagnostics) and you can retrieve error codes when the check engine light comes on.

the procedure to pull the codes is here:

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm

once you get the code, it should help narrow down the problem much more.
