That is my thought. I would think that bad brakes alone would be felt more in the brake pedal than in the steering wheel and the shifter. I know that my brakes are bad, but that is not really the main problem in my case. Anyway, your car may have liquid-filled hydraulic motor mounts, in which case they are usually only replaced if they are suspected to be leaking or otherwise faulty. If they are indeed hydraulic mounts, check them for leaks. If they are not leaking anywhere, they are probably not the root of your problem. These mounts are intended to allow a moderate amount of engine movement, obtaining a very smooth feel inside the car when the engine is idling (although the engine may be "dancing" under the hood @ idle, the vibration is dampened very well by these hydraulic mounts). This tolerance for engine movement can also allow the engine to shake under a high suspension load, such as when braking. Basicaly, what I am trying to say is that, any slight vibration in the chassis may cause the gearshift lever to wobble, even though all of your mounts are okay. I would check them thoroughly before replacement (if they are the hydraulic type, they are around $80 a piece to replace). Anyway Bill, I hope this helps...
