I'm in the middle of rebuilding a 1990 B230FT that spun a rod bearing. Crankshaft and one connecting rod are too far gone, so I'm on the not-yet-successful hunt for the right parts. '85-88 engines are plentiful but not what I need.
As near as I can tell - all 1989 B230 engines used the larger 63MM main bearings - starting with the thrust bearing at #3 and then moving to the rear (#5) mid year. My engine (1990) uses the large bearings with thrust at #5.
I have parts listings for 760, which only shows turbo and V-6...no info on naturally aspirated version. The crankshaft listed is 1378980 and connecting rod 1378797.
I just came across a 1991 B230F (not turbo) that can donate its guts. I'd need to pull it tomorrow morning or it's gone...not even enough time to check with a Volvo dealer.
Here's the question; Are all late B230 crankshafts with the thrust bearing located at the rear interchangeable? And the connecting rod - does the later B230F (non-turbo) use the same conn rod as the turbo engine?
Also, while checking part numbers, I notice that the 1988-1991 B230FT in the 780 uses a different part number for the connecting rods, but same crank and pistons. It calls for an older, 6 digit, part number - 271451. I've never heard that the 780 used forged rods but maybe somebody else knows better.
