Looking into buying a 240 wagon, need insight. 200

Hello to one and all. i am a rookie to this page, and in need of some advice. I am looking for a third car, with room for expansion. I do not know alot about volvos (as i am Saab 900 driver. Go swedes!), but have always liked them. In particular, the legendary 240 wagons. There in lies the question:

If I were to purchase a 240 wagon, what are things to look out for?
- auto vs. manual tranny? (pre-94 Saab 900 automatics are call "auto-tragics")
- engine years?
- wiring issues (I own an 85 Saab, and it was a very BAD year for wiring)?
- rust issues?
- features? (airbag, abs, wheels)

Basically, i guess i am looking for the quarks and charachteristics of this model, and what years where the best?
