Diagnostics for inner tie rods-- CAM gear rack 700 1989

Hello all:

This weekend I noticed that one of my steering rack boots had ripped apart and needs to be replaced. I am planning on doing both at the same time. This also brings the question of replacing the inner tie rod ends if necessary.

How do you diagnose the inner ends-- in other words, what kind of play is indicative of wear-- in-out slack, side-to-side, or either? How much is too much?

Also, are both sides right hand thread, or is one LH?

Thanks!
