fuel gauge replaced, now speedometer AND gauge down 700

RE: recently acquired a new used 740 volvo, vintage '86. great shape.

We elected to have the fuel guage repaired, which was the only major problem.

The shop immediately replaced the fuel guage and fuel pump assembly (claiming that both parts are only sold together. for $300).

The repair work was not successful - the fuel guage does not work.

The shop tried again, after waiting several days for a "special order" part.

Now the speedometer is down. And the fuel guage doesn't work. MAjor bummer, since the odometer was the defacto fuel guage).

The shop is calling in an electronic specialist, to be continued on Saturday.


Any suggestions?

Is this the "dreaded crumbling electrical insulation" problem?
