Fuel pump problems?? 700 1980

Ok I am new this board, actually this is my first post on this board.
I am not totally new to these turbo intercooled motors, but new to Volvo.
I have an 87' 740 turbo/intercooled wagon, that I must say"I love it!"
But today I had a problem, I was heading down the road and the car started acting like it was running out of fuel. Well when it did completely die, I found out that it did. I realized that my high pressure pump under the car was not running when I was trying to start it. I was away from home and did manage to use a piece of wire to the hot side of the high press pump and it worked. Car started up, but the car still wanted to act up under slightly heavy throtle. It did do this a few times before it crapped out on me today.
I guess what I am trying to find out is this:
What could cause my fuel to be shut off. I have not increased boost at all.So not a saftey for too much pressure.
Can you run with just the high pressure pump,Could I just be "pulling" the gas throught the pump that feeds the high pressure pump?
Any help from you guys would be a great help.
~Rich
