Car shudder in first gear 700

Hi,

Since we bought our 740 1989 2.0 manual a few weeks ago we've been finding that lately when we drive the car "shudders" really badly when driving off in first gear.

In traffic it's a nightmare and when it's bad it feels like the whole car is shaking pretty violently. To stop the shudder we try and use a lot of clutch when driving off from a standstill if the car starts shaking and this sort of stops it.

Basically this shudder happens worse from a standstill and we're finding the car isn't driving very smoothly in either first or second gears. Up to speed in 3rd and above it's fine, and the car still accelerates smoothly at higher speeds.

We've looked at the FAQ and can't find anything specific, so I was wondering if anyone here could help?

The engine has 140,000 miles, but the car seems to have been well looked after.

Thanks,

Simon.
