Roaring sound under hood under power 700 1988

I have an 88 Turbo.Until recently I would occasionally get this roaring of air under hood when accelerating but now that it is warm out it is constant. There is some power loss but the boost gauge shows the usual readings. I thought it might be my wastegate but that would dump right into the exhaust system, right? This rush of air is loud. Also, there is the sound of a fanbelt sqealling under heavy acceleration. I just cannot get a sense of where is roar comes from, even when I have the hood up and rev the engine. If the turbo was failing, could the blades contact the case? Would it sound like a squealing fan belt? And why the roar? I was under the impression turbos failed fairly soon when they started to go. I'd sure appreciate any thoughts on my mystery. The car works fine but I suspect I'd better get to the bottom of this before I get a surprise. Thanks, Bruce A, St. Paul
