OK so i have gone thru the fires of hell fixing a towbar to my 91 940 turbo...but i have found a few things out...
1. Almost all european 940's have a towbar connection plug in the rear left well, situated at the front of the well, big ugly black thing. This connects to power, indicators, repeater indicator light on dash etc.
I say almost all cos mine didnt! &^%*^%
2. WHen installing towbar u need to install a split charger unit, and to prevent the bulb out curcuit doing its thing a light sensor unit, plus (in the uk either an audible or visual confirmation of indicator unit). U can wire up the repeaters on the dash, but my volvo dealer says if u dont have the plug on the back its a instruments out job....
3. This little lot is a whole load of little electronic do-dads that look like they would break if i sneezed on them...
4. Volvo very helpfully install rubber bungs in the base of the wells so u can get cables thru.
5. dont spur power of the electric arial feed like the towbar place tells me he does...u can need up to 40 amps...and that curcuits fused for 15....and DONT up the fuse value its there for a damn good reason!
6. Run new feeds back from the battery fusing them AT the battery. If u dont and they short out....well hope u r carrying a fire extinguisher.
7. I put all my do-dads in a black plastic instrument case in the rear well (all pre wired) this protects them and the wirring and means minimal connection in the car. I also included a cigar lighter socket...for accessories...
8. I ran in two feeds, one permanantly live and one switched by a relay to cut it when the ingition is off...
I know this isnt exactly 'stock' and only my approach...but i thought it might prove usefull to someone else..
