Switch to synthetic oil '95 960 900

I'm planning to change my 35k 95 960 to synthetic oil, but am unsure of the proper drill.
I've read that there are guidelines for first filter, and subsequent ones, and initial oil change, and second, etc.
What are recommended brands and viscosity. I live in S.F. Bay Area, and temperature differences are certainly not extreme.
Also would appeciate recommended intervals of succeeding oil and filter changes.
Car is used mostly by my wife, with a lot of around town driving at low speeds.
Most other trips are of relatively short(300 miles) distances at normal highway speeds (65-75mph.)
Any and all input will be appreciated.
Jim
