sequential speedo cable failure 200 1982

I just installed the new aftermarket speedo cable, connections were easy to make. Speedometer/odometer still dead.

To summarize: speedometer was working, stopped, cable was broken 2 inches from tranny attachment. Replaced with recycled cable, still no speedo response, disconnected at instrument cluster and observed while driving: cable was not rotating. Replaced with new cable, speedo not responding.

I haven't disconnected the new cable at the speedo to observe, but it appears very likely there is a problem with the attachment at the tranny. When the original cable was removed, it appeared that the broken segment came out intact.

Am I missing something at the connection with the tranny? It's behaving as if there is a failed connection where the cable should be seating. I can't detect a problem but this is a tough spot to inspect.
