aw70 overdrive 700 1991

I've looked at the FAQ but from the list of symptoms given I can't really tell what my problem is. Today as I slowed down and approached a stop light the overdrive arrow in the dashboard came on suddenly. I did not press the button to make it come on. I then pressed the button to try to make the light go off and nothing happened. I tried again after about 15 seconds and this time the light went off. Can a bad relay make the light come on like that suddenly? I am under the impression that the relay has nothing to do with the dash light.

Thanks in advance for ideas.
