#9 Air Conditioner Fuse Blows 700 1990

I recently purchased a 1990 740GL wagon with 130K miles. The car appears to have been well maintained, but was driven very little for the last six months that the previous owners had it. Other than needing new motor mounts and front suspension bushings (both on order), it is in good shape. Last week, while driving home, I smelled the faint aroma of burning wire insulation, and then the air conditioner quit. I checked the fuse block and discovered that the 15amp fuse in the #9 slot had blown, and I replaced it with a new one. I then tested the power windows and turn signals (both shown to be on the circuit with the air conditioner clutch) with the car "motor stopped but ignition switch on", and that worked fine. Starting the motor and turning on the air conditioner (non ECC type) results in a blown fuse in several minutes. I did a brief inspection of the lead going to the AC clutch, and it looks fine. The Haynes book that I have stops in 1988, and I hate to rip into wire looms to do a manual trace of the wiring. Has anyone run into a similar issue, or at least know of a good place to start?
