How hard is it to replace the rear seal? 700

Hi,

My 88 744ti volvo has been leaking oil, and I was unable to find the leak so I sent it in to the mechanic. He said it was the rear seal. Now, this is really annoying since I just has that replaced about 5,000 miles ago at a volvo specialist in San Jose.

He wants almost 600 bucks to replace is (about 100 in parts).

I would like to know what you think, is this a good price?

How hard is it to do this myself? I am a shade tree mechanic,I've torn down engines before but nothing newer than 1950 so I don't know that much about precision work.

What happens if I just ignore the leak and keep adding oil?
Could it be something else, like the rear bolts?

This is really frustrating. In the last year I have put about 3000 dollars in parts and repairs into that car, about what the car is worth. It only has 75,000 miles on it.....

Thanks
