Another AC question - feels like a miss 200 1992

My 92 245 cools waaaayy better than the '88 ever did. That was one of the first things I noticed when I got the car last summer. Just started using the AC again this week - with New England temps in the 90's and humidity to match. But here's a new symptom - when I engage the AC, the engine feels like it has a 'miss' - it accelerates unevenly. The compressor clearly consumes a lot of power, as acceleration with the AC on is a lot slower than normal, even with the VX cam. But I am perplexed by the miss or roughness... almost as if the drive belt was intermittently grabbing, then slipping. All belts were new last fall, and were re-tightened after a month or so of break-in. Is this perhaps a symptom of low refrigerant charge?

BTW, I posted a message here a couple of weeks ago which I must retract... my 92 245 indeed came with R12 refrigerant, not R134a as I stated. It's the wife's 850 which has the new stuff... just had a 'senior moment' and recalled the wrong under-hood label. Hope I didn't lead anyone astray.
