How to modify air cleaner

Well, the reason Pablos can't recommend K&N air filters, is that he is an Amsoil dealer. Simple as that. I'm not knocking Amsoil products, I now run Amsoil oil and other products in all three of our cars, but I also run K&N air filters in 2 out of the three, and the third is a K&N knock-off, same exact type of filter. I'm not going to knock Amsoil air filters, I've never used them. I have however used K&N air filters in quite a variety of vehicles over the past 12 years, ranging from V8 Mustangs to VW's to Dodge Neons to our 1990 245. No great seat of the pants power increase was felt, but they do flow better than paper filters.

As for air box modifications, if you use a K&N (or Amsoil) drop-in air filter, no modifications are needed to fit the improved filter in the stock airbox. Some people have removed the hot/cold air flapper and thermostat and sealed that part of the airbox off to always get cooler air in, as well as done other modifications to the stock air box. On our 245, I just completely removed the airbox and clamped a conical K&N filter to the end of the tube coming from the AMM. While this is actually a warm air intake vs the more desirable cold air intake (it currently sits behind the AC condensor and radiator) I am still ion the experimenting stage. I plan on extending the intake down to a hole I'm going to cut in the belly pan with mandrel bent exhaust tubing and putting a larger K&N conical filter on it. I'll let everyone know how it works out.
