Radiator Temp Sensor not connected at all. 200 1993

Hola Bricksters:
The temperature sensor at the radiator on my 93 245 is not connected at all. It is present in the 3-row Nissens rad but the contacts are bare (=no wires connected). How does the fan know when to come on? Is there another sensor that sends a signal to the electric fan in front of the rad? I've heard it come on now and then, especially during long waits in traffic while idiling.
Any wiring experts out there who have an idea?
Gracias in advance.
