Did the car die as a result of the overheating, or were these totally separate events?

Overheating while running the A/C is not normal, 106 degrees or not. Check the mechanical fan clutch. Does the electric fan just behind the grill ever come on? Is the radiator reasonably free of crud and bug guts? If you're still on the original radiator, it's probably clogged up internally. Consider a new Nissen's all metal 3-row unit.
