Plastic heater control valve 900 1996

As part of my preventive maintenance project, I am changing over all the hoses this weekend including the "expensive" heater hoses and heater control valve. The valve in my car has a round metal vacuum housing, but the new one purchased from dealer is made of plastic. I heard the plastic one tends to erupt easily. Will the eruption cause massive coolant loss, or just vacuum failure? I am not sure if I should keep using the old one and hold on to the plastic valve as a backup. Any comment on the valve and suggention on dos and don'ts of my project is very much appreciated.
