A/C Compressor DOA at dealer 700 1990

My wagon had functioning (albeit lukewarm) air conditioning last summer with a known leak. Attempted to use a/c last week with no cooling, naturally assumed the dealer could trace the leak and charge system. It seems they got the leak nailed to one of the supply lines, but the compressor is shot. With a quote of $1200 to fix, I'm obviously second-guessing. Can anyone recommend any options for checking the dealer's diagnosis, and if true, can I get hold of a rebuilt/aftermarket compressor? Thanks for the help
