Faulty cold starting -- fuel related? 200 1984

My '84 244GL, B23F n/a also has that annoying habit of stalling immediately after starting and/or putting it into gear. Upon restart, and with a little of coaxing on the gas pedal, it will finally take the hint and run smoothly.

Yes I have sone all the service checks on the throttle body, intake, idle motor, etc.

I am wondering if this is a matter of insufficient initial fuel pressure, such as might be prresent with a faulty fuel check valve.

I understand this model year didn't come with a fuel check valve. Can one be added when I change the fuel filter?
