940 starts then dies 900 1991

Hello everyone

It's been quite cold here in the mornings lately (1-3 degrees Celsius)and my 940 doesn't like it. When I go to start the car it will start fine and then die straight away. Will then usually restart fine. However, this morning it started, died, restarted and the idle gradually climbed up to about 1200 rpm and stayed there. Tapping the accelerator did nothing. I ended up switching the car off then restarting and this solved the problem. What could be causing this? The idle valve perhaps? Or could it be a symptom of a dying battery?
I hope someone can provide me with some insights.

Thank you
Brad
