Strange sound and dead car..... 200 1990

My 1990 240 DL (automatic) did something very strange, and I couldn't find anything similar in the troubleshooting guide.
I've driven it for a while with no problems (I purchased it last month w/185 K on the odometer). This afternoon (temperature was about 88 degrees F) I turned the key and when the engine turned over I heard a sound like a loose belt, but more of a grinding, metallic shriek than a rubber whine, and the overdrive light on the dashboard was lit. I turned off the engine, checked under the hood, and saw nothing unusual, battery level OK, nothing loose.
When I turned the ignition key again, nothing happened. No click, no sound, nothing from the starter or engine. All the standard instrument panel lights were on, which is normal before ignition.
Fuses were all ok.
A few minutes later I turned the key again and she started up as if nothing had happened.
Does anyone have an idea as to what this might have been?
I'd hate to have it happen far from home and not be able to get it going.
