A/C Compressor 700

Okay, here's the ?. My A/C compressor on my '87 760 seems to lock up for just a few seconds @ a time. Watching it the, belt pulley stops spinning. The belt is a little loose and the compressor can be shaken a little on it's mount. Is it possible that the belt is loose enough to slip when the pressure builds, or is my compressor going to that great A/C graveyard in the sky? The system cools very well while idling (although that's when I've noticed the pulley stopping) or coasting, but anything over 2000 rpm it seems to cut out.

Thanks,
pbrown
