Please help, can't rev over 4500 rpm's 900

I own a 940T with 150,000 on it. I'm currently on vacation and while I've been here for the past week I've ran with the gas light on about 5 times. Well today I was almost outta gas and I went to merge on the interstate and I couldn't rev over 4500 rpms. I went ahead and put gas in the car and still the same problem. I thought it maybe a fuel filter so I haven't changed it yet. However the car runs like a bat outta hell until you hit 4500 rpm and then it's like the rev limiter wont let it rev over 4500 it just serges if you hold the pedal to the floor!! Please help any help better than none!!!
