Temp gauge sender location clarification - 965 900 1994

I can see a brass boss in the base of the themostat housing with two wires expoxied in which ran to a plug just below the upper radiator hose. Is this the correct temp sender. Volvo says that it is the same as the one on the right rear of the head for the ecu. They don't look the same. I'm going to the dealer which is 50 miles away. The local import part shop says they have a temp sender and sensor listed for this car for about 20 bucks less than the dealer. Of course they must order which doesn't help in identification. H E L P!
