1986 240 AMM question/help 200

Hello Gentlefolk!
My son has an 86 240 with 200K + miles - its a beater, looks like hell but has been reasonably reliable and he loves it.
Recently it failed Northern Kentucky's echeck. I didn't really have the time to fool with it so I had him take it to the local tire shop (I know....). They put in plugs, wires, cap, rotor, set timing, etc - got me to the obligatory $200 to get the echeck waiver. However, it failed the recheck echeck miserably - hc level, get this - 25 times what it was before! At an idle it belches black smoke and obviously running very rich. Actually backfired and blew the marginal muffler out. I got the tire shop to refund the labor portion of their work.
If I disconnect the AMM - the idle smoothes out. Sooo this is a bad AMM right? This has the 007 flavor. I have a 002 off our 83 parts car. Anyone want to trade? Anybody got an especially reasonable 007?
