86 240DL timing belt question 200

When aligning the timing belt: The cam sprocket mark aligns to the upper cover mark, the intermediate sprocket mark align to the cover mark at about 3'oclock and the crank shaft mark to the block mark. Now when I apply the belt, I can not get belt marks to align proper with the sprocket to cover marks. I have to either align one notch off on the belt or aligh the sprocket marks to the belt marks but then be one notch off from the cover alignment notches. What takes precedence or is it possible that the Gates belt is incorrect. The car will start and idle proper and will acclerate to 35 to 50 mph then suddenly will die. Most often this will happen after a minor bump or jar of the road way. The AMM is good, as is the Fuel Relay , the fuel pressure valve. The throttle position switch does not click as per Hayes Manual. Not too ssure about the knock sensor, but the o2 sensor is good.

Thank you for your help and assistance..two very elderly gentlemen about to give up and apply a 357 magmun enema to the engine block and return to Fords or Chevys....
