1978 242GT 230k B21f M46: Problem started in January when car would start and idle, but not run well under load (seemed like it was running out of gas). Dropped off at shop and main fuel pump had died. Replaced main pump and car ran fine until tank went below 1/2, so replaced pre-pump. At this point the car will start and idle fine, but as soon as you try to move it will buck and act like it is starving for fuel, much like when the tank is below 1/2 and the pre-pump isn't working. Dropped off at shop again and fuel pressure and volume check out fine, but swapped in known good main and pre-pumps to make sure, didn't help. Swapped "brain" (both inner fender brain and passenger kick panel brain) from a running car, no help. Swapped distributor(the whole thing), cap, rotor, coil, plugs, wires, resistor, fuel pump relay, frequency valve relay, warm-up regulator, idle air bypass valve, complete fuel distributor w/ frequency valve (that was a pain), O2 sensor, all to no avail. Problem doesn't get any better or worse with any of these changes. Took exhaust apart and verified that cat is clear (runs the same with no exhaust). Tested wiring harness, no signs of decay and all wires carry voltage and load no problem. At this point, is it possible that the cam is the culprit? Maybe a bad cam gear? I'm very close to out of ideas and about ready to pull my hair out, any ideas would be appriciated greatly. Thanks for reading this long post.
