Intermittent 'Check Engine' light 700 1991

Occasionally when I start up my '91 n/a 745, the Check Engine light comes on. It goes off a second or two after I put the car in Drive (it's an automatic), but it seems to stay on if I put the car in Reverse first, until I put it in Drive. I took it to my mechanic, but it didn't do it while it was there, and they checked to see if there were any residual codes, but there were not. Is there a way I can check those codes myself, or do I need a special tool?

Thanks,

Jenn
