brakes squeal 700 1991

I have a 1991 Volvo 740 station wagon. About 3 months ago I had a mechanic replace the discs and pads. Ever since the brakes always squeal (moderately) at a certain braking speed. I have read about how to resolve this problem on this website, but I want to know if it is dangerous to have squeaky brakes ie - is it a sign that something is wrong? The brakes work very well, so I do not want to alter them unless it is necessary, having no experience in working with brakes. Also is there such a thing as a wearing in period or should the brakes never make any sound?

Ben
