Windshield Replacement: old style urethane tape or new rubber gasket? 200

Time has come to replace the cratered original windshield on my '83 244 turbo. I would like to re-use the original matt finish black windshield moulding, but the glass man says he will ONLY install the (newer) style rubber gasketed windshields, as used on the later 240's. He says that he broke too many of the older urethane type windshields. The dealer still sells the moulding retaining clips for the older style windshields though, which use the urethane tape. Does anyone have a positive experience installing the older style taped windshields without breakage? I've done my own 140 windshields in the past, but the glass guy says that the 140's weren't as prone to breakage. Tips? Comments? Any suggestions appreciated.
