trans troubles 700 1989

Well a couple weeks ago my wife and did some traveling 700+ miles on our 745. It was great until we got back and tried to drive the 745 to church. It ran high RPMs like the overdrive was not engaging. So before when i could do 74 mph @ below 3000rpm. I have been driving 55mph well above 3000 RPms. I have checked the relay, had my mechanic put a new solenoid in (did not fix it), and put Lucas' Transmission fix in it. It is still doing it. My mechanic thinks that a valve maybe sticking. Does that sound right to everyone out there? Do you think that I should replace the whole trans or let him try to fix the valve? Let me know what you all think about this troubling transmission woes. I am so ready to get my 745 out of sickbay.

Thanks
