Overdrive again! 700

Chaps,

I know it's an old question that you're all sick of but please help me! Ok, I have had the o-rings on my overdrive solenoid replaced (1988, 740 Turbo, 4 speed manual with electronic overdrive) but it is still going into overdrive on its own accord when it gets hot.
There is a gash in the solenoid unit itself (internal)as though it has been out before (I've only had car 4 weeks) so could this be doing the damage? Before I resort to buying a new unit could anybody suggest another remedy? Also, when I press the button to activate, no light comes on the dashboard to say it is in gear. It used to but other than being a blown bulb are there any other ideas to what it could be?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Kind regards

Paul. (North East England, UK)
