A/C blows fuse 9 700 1990

When I turn on the a/c in my new to me 740 turbo the #9 fuse blows. This happened as my wife was driving down the road, all of a sudden no cold air from vents and power windows wouldn't work. Replaced the fuse and it broke when I cranked the car. Replaced it again, turned off the a/c and it did not blow, everything else worked fine, turn signals and pw. This is my first 740 and I just got it this morning, please help.
