'Check Engine' light on 200 1991

I have a brand new to me 1991 Volvo wagon, that has been serviced regularly with all records etc. Today the "CHeck Engine" light came on when the car was running and stayed on. The manual says something like drive immediately to your nearest volvo mechanic as the engine diagnostic system has detected a fault.
I noticed in the service records that 5,000 km ago there was a work order to check why the "Check Engine" light was on, which resulted in a $45.00 bill for cleaning engine connections.
Does anybody know if this is a common problem, and what the possible causes might be. Does anyone know where these engine connections are and are they easy to get to to clean??
Thanks.
