my lovely won't start, buzzing noise from behind dash? 200 1988

greetings volvo gurus,

my car would always stall once or twice before it would successfully start, but i've been noticing lately that to get it started i've had to crank it longer. yesterday i went to go to work and it wouldn't start at all. it tries, makes all the 'ruh-ruh-ruh' sounds, but never actually starts. i tried it once or twice, and noticed that when the key was in the position directly before start, a buzzing noise came from behind the dash. unfortunately, i know as much about cars as i do about theoretical physics, and before i take it to the shop i'd like to know if anyone could give me an idea of what could be wrong. thanks!
