I think it was a matter of legality and space. It wasn't that long ago that the european headlamps weren't legal here, the european lamps, being large rectangles left spaces which were easily filled with the quad lamp system. The flat hooded models had the sigle round lamps too, instead of the broader european lamps. Once the european lenses became legal here of course it was much more cost effective to build all models alike, they may stillhave higher powered bulbs though.

I hope this helps. I get so much help from the board, I just like to contribute whatever I can.

I personally use the quad round lamps. They've been on 4 models now and I keep a spare set just in case. The quad rectangles just looked to "American" for my taste.
