roof racks / gutter clamps 900

I would like to build a simple roof rack to carry a kayak, canoe, lumber, etc, but don't want to pay the money they want for a Thule or similar rack. I'm looking for a set of gutter clamps which you can then bolt 2x4's to, to make a set of inexpensive racks. I've searched the web, but can't find anything. Have any of you build anything similar, and if so, where did you get the gutter clamps?
