How many contraptions control the headlights??? 200 1993

Gracias, Bricksters:
Finally got home after 3,845 mile trip...however, it was disconcerting when driving across the 100 mile stretch of the King Ranch in Texas at midnight. I would try to use the high beams and the lights would GO OUT!!! Higher heart rate would start, especially at 75 mph in the darkness....drove the rest of the way on low beams only.
Could it be headlight switch or the steering column switch (how to test it??), the headlight relay (on the passenger side fender???) or the timing relay ( where is it located)??.
Does anyone have a protocol for eliminating the switches one at a time??
Thanks for all your help.
el Raidman.
