B230ET blowing blue smoke 700

Hi,

Bought a car the other day for 150 bucks. The car is a 1988 745 Turbo Intercooler with the B230ET and M46, interior and exterior are nice and everything works apart from a few niggles. Now, the engine is the big question mark here. You guys in the states seem to know these turbo bricks better than us Europeans so am asking you what could be the problem. The engine blows excessive smoke, bluish in colour, as if oil is burning somewhere, it does this mostly as lower revs, on the freeway usually the car is ok and above 3000 rpm, the engine runs fine. Also, I am wondering if the turbo is functioning properly as there seems to be little boost, although the neddle goes into the yellow.

Any ideas?

Also, my VIN states my engine as 86. How do I know if this is an ET or an FT?

George
