M47 Transmission interchangeability 200

Am driving a 1991 240 wagon with a progressively noisier 5 speed M47 tranny in all gears except 4th. Was informed that an replacement used M47 would have to come from a 90-93 vehicle, something different about earlier 84-89 M47s. Does anyone know if this information is correct? If so, what is the difference between early and late versions of the M47? Can the differences be overcome?
