Are replacing front shocks as bad as all that 200 1991

Ok I'm getting my feet wet with getting rid of a sqeeking noise in
the front engine compartment which I assume is from the front shocks.
They've never been replaced since purchased in 91 so I figure it's about
time. I got a repair manual from the local book store and it looks like
you have to take the whole front-end apart before you can access the shocks.
Did I read this right or am I missing something?
