Transmission swap on a 240 Turbo

I posted a message last week requesting information about converting an 83 240 turbo from an automatic to a manual transmission. I received some helpful responses, and purchased an M46 from a local U-Pull yard. I think I've got everything I need from the clutch cable on back to the two piece drive shaft. (I still have to go back and get the clutch and flywheel.) What I'm still not sure about is if I need to also purchase the rear end. Is the gear ratio different than one from an automatic car? In other words does the transmission determine what rear end ratio a car has?

Thanks
